Mrs. Wishy-Washy

This week Kindergarten and 2nd grade are teaming up for a Mrs. Wishy-Washy mini unit.  Today K students read to their 2nd grade friends, and then our 2nd grade friends read a Mrs. Wishy-Washy book!  Tomorrow, we will dive right into a reader's theater...we can't wait!

Busy Kinders

So, we had an awesome Halloween party.  It was a great day filled with trunk-or-treat and loads of candy.  We also celebrated our accomplishment of knowing all letters and sounds.  All 25 of us are sooooo smart!  I am so proud of how much each and every kiddo is learning this year.  And today, we got to check out some ARMY gear that Mr. Dowdy let us borrow.  I would say that Veteran's Day was a success.  Please join us on Thursday night for the "Big Read!"  There will be guest readers, letter writing to Santa, cookies and milk, and the computer lab will be available to take AR tests.  What a great way to read as a family and earn those points for our RR Reward this 9 weeks.  I hope to see you all there!

April Showers...

April has definitely been fun! We are continuing to learn, learn, learn! It is "raining" smart kinder-kids! This month we are continuing to learn about tens and ones, addition/subtraction story problems, and addition/subtraction math facts. We really are getting good! Let's not forget reading. We have some Accelerated Reader stars, too. Our class is buzzing with readers, and I love every minute of it. Be looking forward to some great times at SES. We will be having our first SlabTown Festival! Don't forget to bring in spare change so we can reach our $500 goal. We sure would like for Mrs. G to kiss the pig. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time during the festival, contact the school office. Again, thanks for all you do, parents.

Due to the unexpected snow break, we had to postpone our Dr. Seuss study to this week.  We have explored many books by Dr. Seuss, discussed his pen name, Theo LeSieg, learned about the narrator of each story and how to figure out who that might be, wrote what we would do on a rainy day, and laughed at all the cooky rhymes!  Instead of writing on paper like we usually do, we decided to write on our marker boards today for a change.  After reading, The Cat in the Hat, we wrote what we would do on a rainy day.  We had a lot of different ideas...here are a few!

Standards Based Grading

I hope you have had a chance to read Mrs. Gregory's letter about the K-2 endeavor to adopt Standards Based Grading.  For Kindergarten, not much has changed.  The main change is the language.  We are no longer using 1, 2, or 3.  We are now using M-Mastery, PM-Partial Mastery, NM-Non Mastery, and WM-Mastery with Modification.  When you see these letters on your child's paper, this will indicate if they have mastered that Common Core Standard.  This method gives you a clear and concise knowledge of your child's learning.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  I think you will really like this method of grading!

Brrrrrrr!

December and January have been a chilly  few months.  We didn't let that stop us from learning new things! This week are learning about author/illustrator, Jan Brett.  We are reading as many of her books as we can and having some in depth conversations about similarities in her books, our favorite book, characters, setting, main ideas, lessons we have learned etc. If you get a chance, check her out!   Friday will be the 100th Day of School and we will celebrate in style.  I can't wait to share some photos of this awesome day.
